Funny you said "As a child we had a police station in the next village and a ‘Bobby On The Beat’. He did not ride a rainbow coloured bicycle, but he knew the local community and we him." .... we had a the station in our village (the size of a big toilet) and 2 bobbies on the beat, that I am sure in hindsight played the good and bad cop.

One afternoon /early evening, we jumped over the primary school gates and played football, they came and gave us a good bollocking for something like trespassing, although good cop just winked at us. We literally got a good slap across the ear (and whilst we had respect for them, also fear) ... they drove us home and told our parents - usually Mum at that time that then told our Dad later ... and we either got belted or smacked to hell... thing is - made me a better person, PLUS always wanted to be a copper and actually got accepted, but moved back up North instead of staying to be one in London. Nowadays, I would not even piss on most if they were on fire (most not all).

Interesting.

Sadly today, it's hardly Dixon of Dock Green; though that was a very romanticised TV view of the plod, but in my village it was rather 'Evenin' all'.
